Having practiced sword fighting for longer than I have magic, it was only a matter of time before I attempted to combine the two. I've seen read some things by others who have attempted it, and I think I understand the core concept for it. The execution however, is where I seem to be falling short.
Primarily, I am a fencer, and the weapon I use is the sabre. Thus, the attacks are all quick slashes, and sharp jabs. It is all controlled by the wrist, with little motion coming from the arm itself. This leads itself to not being very receptive to the flow of energy, at least as far as I've been attempting it. Also, the aura of the blade doesn't seem to want to extend further than it is for any extended length of time.
A while ago, I tried out kendo and was a spectacular failure at it as far as applying it to matches. However, I was moderately good with katas, and they have been working better than my practice with the sabre. The shinai itself also seems to take to energy far better than the sabre. I suspect this has something to do with the sabre being made of metal, and the shinai of bamboo. Metal and I have never gotten along very well as far as magic goes. The only metal I've been able to work even moderately well with is silver, and that was only when I was working on giving my favorite ring some special qualities. But that's a story for another time.
In theory, it is fairly simple. The weapon is already an extension of your own body, and thus has it's own aura. By extending the aura of one's own weapon, altering it with various elements (or even the energy of a deity if they're feeling kind enough) you can deal damage to a person's aura, which while not physically painful can throw a person off enough to land a blow or two, force your energy into the opponents blade making it more difficult for them to control, or adding in an opposing element to the opponents aura, adding in chaos and forcing them to fight an internal battle as well as the external one. Defensively, utilizing a magical shield can reduce the amount of energy in an opponent's weapon, as well as effect the energy contained within their strike.
As I mentioned above, I have been having some issues with the execution of the practice. My best guesses as to why I've been having issues mostly revolve around the fact that I haven't had a sparring partner in quite some time and thus have been attempting this solo. I will be meeting up with an old friend and sparring partner in the near future, and the two of us plan to work to further our understanding of this field. Hopefully, I'll get things sorted out then. At this point however, the only time I'm able to keep up the kind of energy flow through my weapon is when I'm taking on the energy of either Badb or Cuchulain.
Has anyone else attempted to mix magic with sword fighting, martial arts, or any other physical activity? Any and all feedback would be wonderful, and I'll update this whenever I get new insight into how it works
