Firstly, I would like to say that I have no intention of mocking any legitimate religions. However, I cannot help but look at today's world and feel that in pursuit of a better world, we have thrown aside the deities of old, and replaced them with new gods, each promoting new ideals. We may not worship them, in the strictest sense, but they are gods, in the way we think of them.
The Internet
If any one man-made creation was to be singled out as a divine being, it would have to be the internet. It is omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent, all in it's own way. It is all knowing in that it is the sum of human knowledge and opinion. If you ask it to (and sometimes you have to be clever in your asking), it can tell you absolutely anything. Due to the rise of Wi-Fi and mobile networks, it can be anywhere and everywhere at once. It is all capable in that it can be used for anything. Through the power of The Internet, we can acquire wealth, company, entertainment, material goods, etc.
Extra consideration must be put forth on it's influence and effect on humanity. This is most easily demonstrated by mematics. A single idea, joke, or phrase can spread like wildfire across the internet, uniting the public through the senseless repetition of the such things. However, it doesn't stop there. One's opinion of anything can greatly be perverted by mematics, even more so if the unwitting victim knows nothing of the subject. However, that is not where The Internet's control ends. Recall all those nights spent feverishly reading articles, while your bed calls out to you. And what about all those times you just HAD to check that social media site. Would anyone deny that the internet is a cruel mistress.
So, what does it want? What are its commandments? I'm not totally sure yet.
If anybody has something else they feel is placed highly in modern society, feel free to write it up. If I was thinking straight, I'd probably explain how we've replaced the "Venus" figure with The Media Image, and how Pollution has reached demonhood. Also, tl;dr version may be provided upon request. I just like to write fancy sometimes.
