Hello there. I came by when I saw the thread on /x/, and thought this could be interesting.
I've been practicing magic for a few years now. I have a rough knowledge of a good bit of stuff, though I prefer to focus on talismans and divination, particularly scrying. Recently I've been working on combining magic with swordsmanship, though it's not going as well as I'd of liked.
Despite my name, I don't practice alchemy all to much. It's just a name I've used online for long enough that it's my default. Nice meeting you all!

Hello Alchemic, out of curiosity what style of swordsmanship are you looking to combine with magic?

Well, I've fenced for longer than I've practiced magic, so that was my first instinct. The motions of using a saber just don't flow as well as I'd like them to and they don't quite work as well as I would like them to, given it's my preferred style. Then again, metal really hasn't taken to channeling energy to well for me. I tried kendo for a while, and though I'm not very good at it as far as the martial art goes, it seems to take better to what I'm doing.

Yes, actually. The theory behind his and mine are nearly identical. It's the execution of it where I fall short. So far, unless I do some evocation beforehand, the energy comes out in pulses, rather than extending and altering the aura like it should. This is less of a problem with my shinai as opposed to my sabre, but it is still there.

Hrrm. I used to practice kendo and I still have my shinai. Food for thought.

It's definitely an interesting experience. I'm meeting up with an old friend who's also interested in the subject next week, so perhaps the two of us will be able to come up with something after sparring for a bit. Once I have more of it worked out, I'll post my own guide to it.

Welcome aboard Alchemic. Since you know a bit about magic, how would you explain it to someone who doesn't even know what it is outside of mainstream society?

Well, there are about as many ways to approach magic as there are opinions on it. They can range from the more rigid "if you do x, then y will happen, and you must do it that way" practices of Ceremonial magic (though even that has various ways of practicing within it, like Kabballah and Thelema for example) to Chaote, where it is possible to achieve anything by any process. Then you have practices like the Native American shaman traditions, where the power comes from animal spirits, herbs, and the earth. At it's most basic though, magic is controlling and directing energy via will. Through various processes, you affect change in the world, and in your own mind
